Multiple reports on Friday say Markle, 82, was taken into custody in the state. It has been reported that the arrest relates to possession of child sexual abuse material. He was reportedly arrested at a care facility where he had recently been moved.

How we got here

The arrest follows weeks of reporting on an investigation. In late October, it was reported that Markle was allegedly being investigated after such material was reportedly found among his belongings at a former home in the Philippines. Markle's son, Thomas Markle Jr., reportedly submitted a sworn statement to authorities there. Markle Sr. has denied the allegations.

London's Metropolitan Police later said it received a letter containing the allegations in 2018 and shared it with Harry and Meghan's office, but did not pass it on to other law enforcement agencies. The force is reviewing how it handled the matter, and the police watchdog is now investigating its conduct.

What Meghan has said

In a statement on October 23, Meghan said she was "deeply distressed" by the allegations and that her thoughts were with any children who may have been harmed. She has not publicly responded to the reported arrest.

His health

Markle had been in a Florida rehabilitation center since May after having his lower left leg amputated. He was recently moved to a facility specializing in dementia care.

What we don't know yet

Official details of the charges, the arresting agency, and any court dates have not been confirmed. The reports so far rely on unnamed sources, and an arrest is not a conviction.
